Jefferson County, New Courthouse

  • Jefferson County wanted a structurally sound, modern courthouse that would replace a deteriorating former building. Skanska worked with DLR Group and HSR Architects to deliver a modern facility with a classic courthouse design, featuring improved security systems, comfortable public spaces, expanded offices and larger courtrooms to accommodate more jury trials.

Skanska provided construction management services for Jefferson County on a new 35,000-SF two-story courthouse. The courthouse includes holding space, judge's chambers and jury rooms with secure entrances. The facility also features three courtrooms and a long-term plan to add a fourth with minimal impact to the existing site. Public spaces include areas for payment of fines, such as traffic tickets. This is the first courthouse to be built under a new partially state-funded program to upgrade rural county judicial facilities. The building exterior is a mixture of precast concrete tilt panels with a form liner finish, metal panel siding, cultured stone veneer and a large amount of floor to ceiling storefront. The scope also includes a 34-KW solar array on the roof and uses a VRF mechanical system to increase the building's efficiency. On-time and under budget, Skanska delivered the new courthouse with a cost savings that allowed for expanded renovations of the neighboring parking lot, adding 95 spaces.
