Skanska rebuilt New York City’s largest and busiest subway stop -- the Times Square Subway Station. The station serves as a hub for four subway lines carrying 500,000 passengers daily.
Skanska improved the configuration and architecture of the station, including an expansion of the 41st Street and 7th Avenue mezzanine. This work required the demolition and excavation of the subway roof and roadway in order to relocate and temporarily support major utilities. Skanska installed a complex decking system to allow traffic to run smoothly while construction took place underground.
The scope of the project included:
· extensive demolition and construction of stairways, concrete floors, platforms and pre-cast glass block sidewalk panels
· installation of an artistic mural
· relocation of fare arrays
· management of electrical, signal and minor mechanical and plumbing work
· installation of ornamental metal railings
· installation of floor and wall tile, including several types of ornate mosaic
· construction of an architectural ellipse through the center of the Broadway mezzanine to provide passengers with a view of the multi-layered complex
· installation of an oval array of lighting on the mezzanine level
· construction of a curved wall to feature a decorative arrangement of Broadway show advertisements
