Since the acquisition of Schering-Plough, Merck set out renovations and consolidation plans for many of its campuses due to the duplication of services and staff. One of its first phases was to renovate the Discovery and Preclinical Sciences (DPS) facility at the Kenilworth site. Skanska renovated more than 500,000-SF of chemistry and biology laboratories at K-15 Building. Building K-15 has over a million-SF of laboratories and office space. The building is separated by blocks, serving either a chemistry or biology division. Skanska renovated blocks A, B, C and D to create an open concept with mobile laboratory casework where scientists can easily mobilize to a different laboratory if needed. Renovations and upgrades to current laboratory standards also included HVAC, IT and MEP for operational efficiency and stability. Prior to starting K-15 Building renovations, Skanska renovated swing spaces with laboratories on both the Kenilworth and Rahway campuses. The swing spaces housed the equipment and staff for the duration of the K-15 renovation, and the team demolished the swing spaces once the renovation was complete.
