Gwinnett County, Ga., is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. It saw the need for an expanded wastewater treatment facility even as Phase I of the original plant was being completed.

Skanska was hired to manage the construction of Phase II of the F. Wayne Hill Wastewater Treatment Plant, a $450 million contract. The company implemented the construction based on 3D plant modeling and more than 3,000 drawings.

The scope of the project included construction of:
· a GAC blower building
· a post-ozonation distribution box
· a pre-ozonation distribution box
· a solids storage tank
· an influent pump station
· an ozone/effluent electrical building
· an electrical building
· five pre-stressed concrete equalization tanks and an associated odor control building
· granular activated carbon (GAC) absorbers
· post-ozone contactors
· pre-ozone contactors
· three anaerobic digesters
· two backwash return basins
· yard piping

Other work included:
· modifying backwash return pump station
· modifying existing piping
· modifying GAC absorbers
· modifying two existing anaerobic digesters
· demolition of the membrane demonstration building
· furnishing all labor, materials, equipment and incidentals required for modifications and expansion of the effluent pump station
· installation of a gas control system, including a new compressor building and four new gas storage tanks
· installation of piping associated with the new and modified facilities, including a new electrical ductbank
· procurement and installation of electrical wiring, switches, equipment, appurtenances and transformers
· procurement and installation of instrumentation and controls
