Press release 9/23/2022 12:45 PM CET

The fifth floor of the Spark C building, which houses the head office of the Skanska’s commercial development business unit in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), has just been awarded the renewal of prestigious WELL Commercial Interior certificate. This certification system focuses on the health and comfort of users of commercial spaces, including offices. The renewal means that the standards for air and water quality in the building and the quality of the internal environment are constantly maintained at the highest level. This has been the first such recertification in Poland and in the CEE region, and the second in Europe.

The WELL certification system verifies the quality of office space in terms of its impact on the well-being of users, taking into account over 100 different parameters. Experts conducting the assessment check for things like access to fresh, clean air, good water quality, optimal interior lighting, temperature and acoustics.

The fifth floor of the Spark C building, which is part of an office complex located in Warsaw's Wola district, was first awarded the WELL Commercial Interior certificate in March 2019. Now, IWBI – the international organization assessing buildings in the WELL system – has decided to renew the certificate for the office space in Spark. This makes the space used by Skanska’s commercial development business unit’s employees the first one to have received such recertification in this part of Europe, and the second in the “Old Continent” in general.

The recertification of our office space in the Spark C building is not only a reason to be proud, but above all it is a confirmation that at Skanska we put our employees and their needs first. This is what guides us in creating the work  spaces used by our teams, but also in cooperation with our tenants, and is in aligned with our social and environmental responsibility and ethics. ESG is one of the pillars of our business strategy – says Anna Marciniak, HR & Administration Director, Skanska’s commercial development business unit in CEE.

Skanska’s recertification of its Warsaw head office demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of their employees – said Rachel Hodgdon, President and & CEO, IWBI, and adds: – No stranger to innovation in the region, Spark C was the first building in Poland to receive WELL Core & Shell Certification in 2019, which was also achieved at the Gold level. We’re grateful to Skanska’s dedication to putting people first.

WELLbeing in Spark

The Spark complex has particle filters, adiabatic humidifiers and ventilation systems that provide up to 30% more fresh, clean air than required by office standards. As a result, Skanska employees and visitors enjoy optimal humidity. The filters trap pollen from flowers and fungal spores that cause allergies. Thanks to the use of materials with low emission fit-out elements and material, the air breathed by employees is of very good quality. At the same time, the office has as many as 850 plants that provide more oxygen, create a friendly atmosphere and help address the need for human contact with nature.

As part of the WELL certification, access to clean drinking water is very important. Water in the Spark building is tested for the presence of several dozen chemical compounds. Thanks to this, employees can drink it safely from every tap. The building includes spaces equipped with intelligent lighting that harmonizes with the human circadian cycle, adjusting to the time of day. Employees also enjoy adequate access to daylight.

Art is very important in ensuring the well-being of employees, which is why the interior of the Spark office building has been decorated with murals designed by Olka Osadzińska and designer details prepared by the Kolektyf group.

Skanska not new to WELL certification

This is not the first time that Skanska is a trailblazer in terms of the WELL certification. Spark C was the first building in Poland to receive the prestigious WELL Core & Shell certificate at the end of 2019. In turn, the Czech office investment by Skanska – Visionary in Prague – received WELL Core & Shell as the first project in the entire region of Central and Eastern Europe. In January 2022, the Gdansk-based Wave office building was awarded the WELL Core & Shell certificate at the Gold level. It was the first distinction of this type on the Tri-City market and the first at the Gold level in Poland outside Warsaw. In turn, in April 2022, Centrum Południe in Wroclaw received this certificate as the first investment project in the capital of Lower Silesia region.
