Press release 7/9/2009 12:00 AM CET

Skanska-NDI has signed the EPC Contract with Gdańsk Transport Company (GTC) regarding 62-kilometers long stretch of A1 linking Grudziądz region with Toruń. Contract value amounts 3,145 million PLN.

Works on this stretch have been already commenced. Skanska-NDI are performing preparatory works, in accordance with a preliminary agreement. Today GTC finalized financing for the project, which allows us to start construction works in full scope.

So far the most of technological roads parallel to the site was constructed. Access roads to the construction site of the big bridge over Vistula river near Grudziądz has been built, storage areas prepared, geotechnical works performed and preliminary survey works done. Earthworks aimed at soil preparation stared as well, including the deepest soil exchange to be performed. It is located in Dźwierzno and reaches 22 m deep. Skanska-NDI is responsible for design and construction of A1 on the Nowe Marzy-Czerniewice stretch. Scope of works includes renovation of 14 bridge structures and construction of 51 new structures, including two big bridges over Vistula river. The big bridge near Grudziądz will be the longest structure of such type in Poland and is going to be constructed using free-cantilevered method. The approach viaducts will be built with the incremental launching method.

Five interchanges will be built (including Warlubie interchange located on the constructed Rusocin-Nowe Marzy stretch) along with 4 pairs of rest areas (MOP), 1 maintenance area (OUA), 4 toll stations (SPO) and 1 toll plaza (PPO). We plan to perform 13 million m³ of earthworks and 1,3 million tons of bituminous works.

- For now we have 800 people hired directly. Taking our experience from the previous stretch of A1 we assume that circa 4000 people, including suppliers and subcontractors will be working on the project during the peak period. We will have over 500 pieces of heavy equipment working on the sites during the peak period - says Piotr Janiszewski, A1 Project Director.

The construction of Nowe Marzy-Czerniewice stretch is a direct continuation of the 90 km A1 construction between Rusocin and Nowe Marzy, which was also performed by Skanska-NDI. We handed over the northern part of 25 kilometers to our client in December 2007, over a year ahead of schedule. In October 2008 we finished construction of the remaining 65 kilometers between Swarożyn and Nowe Marzy. This time we opened three months ahead of schedule. Skanska is constructing the motorway in joint venture with the Sopot based company NDI where Skanska has an 80% participation.

Gdańsk Transport Company is Skanska-NDI’s client on A1. GTC has held a concession for 152 kilometers of A1 since 1997. Shareholders are: Skanska Infrastructure Development (30%), Laing Roads Ltd. (29,69%), NDI Autostrada (25,31%) and Intertoll Infrastructure Development (15%).
