Tyfonen property block

Our assignment

Skanska is looking forward to constructing Malmö’s new meeting place for inhabitants of all ages. Attractive meeting places are the heart of a vibrant city and create diversity.

Having won an intense land allocation competition organized by the City of Malmö, Skanska was entrusted with developing the new meeting place of the people of Malmö in collaboration with the Danish architect firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen. All entries were submitted anonymously, with Skanska’s contribution coming out on top after the jury had its say.

“This will be one of Malmö city center’s most spectacular and striking buildings  and a worthy complement to the magnificent Orkanen building,” says the chairman of the Urban Planning Committee, Municipal Commissioner Anders Rubin (Swedish Social Democratic Party), in a press release from the City of Malmö.

The Orkanen building houses Malmö University and will be Tyfonen’s neighbor.

Dynamic using color and light

The architecture of the building is distinguished by the use of a small number of simple materials. Dark brick is varying shades is contrasted by deep white window bays. The ground floor façade largely comprises glass, enabling passers-by to observe life inside the building. This is a way of attracting visitors to the building.

A combination of color and lighting give the building a vibrant dynamic feeling. The rooms are pained in varying shades and, in combination with the lighting, this creates color effects out through the building. Further character is added to the building by way of its sedum plant roof, meaning a green roof comprising bryophytes and sedum plants that can withstand dry periods.

First sod to be cut soon

The project is planned for 2011. Our ambition is to open the doors and welcome the people of Malmö in 2014.
