The New Papworth Hospital is currently under construction in Cambridge, England. It is being built in a single phase in a new location, some 15 miles from the old one.
The specialized cardiothoracic hospital will provide patients, staff and the local and international community with a leading edge healthcare facility. Its design combines a highly efficient clinical layout with a stunning external appearance, and all this is set in beautifully landscaped grounds which capture the essence of the original rurally located tuberculosis hospital that grew to become the pioneering heart and lung treatment and transplant center of excellence that the hospital is today.
The new facility will sit at the heart of the newly forming Cambridge Biomedical Campus, which aims to combine world-class biomedical research, patient care and education on a single site through the co-location of bio-tech companies alongside the existing 12,000-strong community of healthcare professionals and research scientists. This campus is therefore set to become one of the leading biomedical centers in the world by 2020.
BIM technology will be used in the design phase to maximize energy efficiency and ensure the hospital offers long-term flexibility. The technology is also being used to engage clinicians in the construction process.
