Skanska fabricated and erected the steel for the "Oculus" structure at the new World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Santiago Calatrava design is comprised of approximately 11,500 tons of structural steel consisting of portals, arches and rafters that combined give the structure it's unique shape similar to a bird in flight. To erect the Oculus structure, Skanska used two highly specialized tower cranes manufactured explicitly for this project. The Oculus is the centerpiece of the new hub and will serve more than 250,000 pedestrians per day as the primary link for access to NJ PATH trains and 11 New York City subway lines. The steel and glass Oculus structure will allow natural light to shine in on the 225,000 square foot center hall concourse that includes a balcony walkway above similar to Grand Central Station. The transit hub officially opened in March 2016. It is the third largest transportation center in the city behind Grand Central and Pennsylvania Stations.
